North Rhine-Westphalia: Brazen car theft with a tow truck in court

Krefeld (dpa / lnw) - They disappeared never to be seen again: The Krefeld district court has to deal with a particularly brazen series of car thefts today. A 41-year-old from Krefeld is said to have simply loaded more than a dozen parked cars with a tow truck and sold them to the operator of a scrap press in Essen.

13 cars from Krefeld, Duisburg and Mönchengladbach are said to have disappeared. The defendant, who has multiple convictions, is now on trial for particularly serious theft. According to the indictment, two car thefts were filmed by the surveillance camera of a Krefeld car repair shop. In addition, the theft of a third car had been observed by a witness.

The police finally attached a GPS tracker to the tow truck and were able to use satellite tracking to understand that the tow truck always drove to a recycling center in Essen after the thefts. Based on the recycling lists kept there, it quickly became clear who had delivered the stolen cars.

The trial was supposed to take place two months ago, but had to be postponed because of the defense attorney's illness.
