North Rhine-Westphalia: burglar sentenced to almost three years in prison

Mönchengladbach (dpa / lnw) - In the process of a momentous burglary, a man was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison by the Mönchengladbach district court on Monday. In addition, the craftsman's driver's license is revoked. The judges found the 52-year-old guilty of theft in a particularly serious case, endangering traffic, dangerous bodily harm, coercion, property damage and faking a crime. The court credited the accused with confessing and clearly regretting his actions.

At the end of November 2021, he broke into a warehouse in Erkelenz (Heinsberg district) to steal scrap metal and car rims. However, the motion detector went off. The owner of the hall and his son were there quickly. They blocked the access with their SUVs. Her two wives stayed in one of the cars.

When he noticed the men, he "paniced and went full throttle," the accused said on the first day of the trial. He broke through the blockade with his van. The women were injured and suffered fractures and bruises. After the escape, the 52-year-old reported the vehicle as stolen and tried to get an alibi. The property damage of 30,000 euros was offset by the value of the stolen scrap metal of almost 260 euros. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
