North Rhine-Westphalia: BVB confirms Augsburg's interest in Maaßen and is irritated

Dortmund (dpa / lnw) - Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund has confirmed the interest of league competitor FC Augsburg in U23 coach Enrico Maaßen, but denied an agreement. BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl told the newspapers of the Funke media group on Sunday evening that there had been a conversation, but there was no talk of an agreement, let alone an implementation.

"To be honest, I'm very irritated that the topic is appearing in the media and sometimes even being reported here," said Kehl and explained: "I only got a call on Friday and found out that Augsburg was interested on a commitment from Enrico Maassen. Since then there has been exactly one conversation."

Several media had reported on Sunday that the Augsburgers looking for a new head coach were about to sign Maassen. Sky reported that there were only final details to be clarified. The 38-year-old has been the coach of BVB U23 since 2020 and led the team into the 3rd division. The Augsburgers have not commented on the reports so far. The club is looking for a successor for Markus Weinzierl, who announced his departure after FC Augsburg's last Bundesliga game on May 14 against SpVgg Greuther Fürth. He did not previously inform manager Stefan Reuter about his step.
