North Rhine-Westphalia: City truck completely burned out

Mettmann (dpa / lnw) - A municipal truck in Ratingen caught fire and was completely destroyed by the fire, probably due to a technical defect in the hydraulic system. The 61-year-old driver suddenly heard a loud bang on Tuesday morning and immediately noticed a fire on his truck, the fire brigade and police said. He stopped the vehicle and immediately left it with two other employees before it caught fire. Nobody got hurt. The property damage is estimated at at least 30,000 euros.

The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire in the eleven-ton truck in a larger operation. The roads around the scene of the fire were closed for several hours and traffic was diverted. The burnt-out truck had to be recovered with a crane and transported on a low-loader. According to initial investigations, a technical defect in the hydraulic system was the cause of the spontaneous combustion, according to the police.
