North Rhine-Westphalia: Construction of the Leverkusen Rhine bridge is progressing

Cologne/Leverkusen (dpa/lnw) - The construction of the Leverkusen Rhine Bridge on Autobahn 1 is progressing. On Thursday, construction of the two pylons on the left bank of the Rhine near Cologne-Merkenich, which will eventually hold the construction, began. According to Autobahn GmbH, around half of the almost 400 steel components for the new Rhine bridge have been assembled so far.

The first part of the new bridge should be completed by the end of 2023. Trucks should then be able to cross the Rhine again at this point.

The old A1 bridge, which dates back to the 1960s, is used by around 120,000 vehicles every day. The dilapidated building has been closed to heavy trucks for years.
