North Rhine-Westphalia: CSD in Cologne: Reker condemns homophobia and violence

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - At the start of the CSD weekend in Cologne, Mayor Henriette Reker (independent) sharply condemned violence and hostility towards homosexuals. "Whether Oslo or Istanbul - homophobia and transphobia are unacceptable - never and nowhere," said Reker, according to the speech manuscript on Friday. The message of acceptance and appreciation should go out from Cologne this weekend. "With one of the largest Pride events in Europe, we are focusing on diversity as a strength and opportunity for our society."

In Oslo, an attacker fired shots around a popular gay bar last weekend. Two people died and 21 were injured. Scores of people demonstrating for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) people were arrested at the Pride parade in Istanbul last Sunday.

"Whenever people are discriminated against because of their sexual orientation, their gender identity, their origin, their skin color, their religion or because of a physical or mental disability - our civil courage and a strong, upright attitude is always required," said Reker.

A three-day street festival for the CSD began in Cologne on Friday under the motto "For human rights. Many. Together. Strong". There will be music and political discussions on three stages in the old town. The highlight of the weekend is the CSD demonstration on Sunday, to which at least 800,000 spectators are expected.
