North Rhine-Westphalia: Cultivation area reduced: very low harvest of strawberries

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalia's farmers have greatly reduced their acreage for strawberries and thus harvested much less than in previous years. In the federal state, 25,817 tons were produced this year and thus 14.6 percent less than in 2021, the state statistics office IT.NRW announced on Friday in Düsseldorf. The harvest volume has not been that low in the past ten years, the annual value is usually over 30,000 tons. Roughly two-thirds of the lot are outdoor strawberries, one-third grows under cover. The acreage fell by 13.3 percent to 1795 hectares.

Strawberry farmers had a hard time with low prices this year. The Chamber of Agriculture in North Rhine-Westphalia reported that demand was low. One of the reasons for this was that people spent less money on strawberries in times of high inflation.
