North Rhine-Westphalia: cultural harbor in Duisburg-Hochfeld now "national project"

Duisburg (dpa / lnw) - A construction project in Duisburg's problem district of Hochfeld has been included in the federal program "National Urban Development Projects". The federal government is funding the cultural harbor in Hochfeld, which was once used by the mining industry, with almost nine million euros, as can be seen from an overview by the Federal Ministry of Building. The Kultushafen is to be developed into a "multifunctional leisure and meeting space" for the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) 2027. The Hochfeld district of Duisburg is struggling with child poverty and unemployment.

Another project in the Ruhr area is being supported with 7.85 million euros from the federal program. In Bochum, the historic post office is to be developed into a "House of Knowledge" with national appeal. The core of the project is the renovation of the old building.

Across Germany, 18 national urban development projects will be funded this year with a total of around 75 million euros. The Kultushafen in Hochfeld receives the highest funding. 79 applications were submitted. Since 2014, 211 projects have been included in the program and supported with around 670 million euros.

According to the Federal Building Ministry, national urban development projects are supra-regional projects "with clear impulses for the respective community or city, the region and urban development policy in Germany as a whole". They have to identify themselves with a special quality standard.
