North Rhine-Westphalia: Death shortly after birth: doctor and midwife accused

An infant dies in hospital shortly after birth. Should the midwife and the doctor have ordered a caesarean earlier? Now they are on trial for involuntary manslaughter.

Bochum (dpa / lnw) - Four years after the death of an infant in a hospital in Herne, the doctor on duty at the time and the attending midwife have to answer to the Bochum district court for negligent homicide from Friday (10:00 a.m.). The public prosecutor accuses the accused of not having performed or arranged for an emergency caesarean section when the child was born in August 2018. However, such an intervention was indicated because the fetus had clearly not been sufficiently supplied with oxygen several hours before birth. The baby finally died the day after birth after being transferred to a Witten hospital.
