North Rhine-Westphalia: DEG wants to "attack again at the top" with a new coach

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The Düsseldorfer EG wants to attack again at the top of the table in the German ice hockey league with its new coach Roger Hansson. "Our aim is to outperform," said sporting director Niki Mondt on Tuesday when the new head coach was introduced. "We want to give ourselves the opportunity to basically win every game," said the 54-year-old Swede Hansson, who was a world champion and Olympic champion as a player.

He received a two-year contract as the successor to Harold Kreis, who switched to the Schwenninger Wilds Wings. Hansson once played in the DEL together with Mondt and his two future assistant coaches Thomas Dolak and Daniel Kreutzer for the Kassel Huskies. He was most recently a coach in Switzerland at EV Zug.

Kreis had led DEG into the playoff quarterfinals with one of the lowest budgets in the DEL. According to the official objective, it may be more in the future. "We're going into the new season very, very optimistically and want to re-establish ourselves as a serious playoff participant," said shareholder Harald Wirtz, who justified the increased ambitions with greater economic opportunities.

"We have increased the budget," said Wirtz, who for the first time in years can show a balanced budget without having to compensate for losses from shareholders or patrons. "We want to attack at the top again in the next three or four years," said Wirtz.
