North Rhine-Westphalia: Disproportionate increase in asylum applications in the first half of the year

Berlin/Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) - The number of asylum applications in North Rhine-Westphalia in the first half of 2022 grew disproportionately compared to the nationwide increase. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) registered 16,067 applications in NRW from January to June. As can be seen from the statistics published on Thursday, this is 5245 or almost 49 percent more than in the first half of 2021.

According to Bamf, the number of initial applications nationwide rose by around 44 percent to 84,583 applications compared to the same half of the previous year - the largest single item was accounted for by the most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia. About every seventh initial application concerned a child born in Germany under the age of one. Nationwide, most initial applications came from nationals from Syria (24,492), followed by Afghanistan (15,093), Iraq (7512) and Turkey (6217).
