North Rhine-Westphalia: Doubts about 49-euro ticket financing

Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) - The agreement between the federal and state governments to finance the 49-euro ticket for local transport is not sufficient from the point of view of transport companies and municipalities in NRW. If more than the planned three billion euros are necessary, the municipalities would have to pay for this, said managing director Joachim Künzel from the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) on Wednesday in the transport committee of the state parliament. From the point of view of José Luis Castrillo from the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR), an obligation to make additional payments is absolutely necessary. However, Hilmar von Lojewski, as a representative of the municipal umbrella organizations, did not believe that the federal government would renegotiate.

NRW Transport Minister Oliver Krischer (Greens) praised the agreement: "This ticket will significantly change public transport in Germany." At the same time, he admitted in Düsseldorf that there were still many open questions to be clarified. "We're not done yet."

For the so-called Deutschlandticket, NRW is planning 560 million euros in the budget for the coming year. The federal government should pay half of that.
