Eschweiler (dpa / lnw) - A drunk driver sank his car in the Inde in Eschweiler (Aachen region) on Saturday night. The man explained that he probably underestimated the width of the road when turning and then drove his vehicle down the embankment, police said. Luckily for him, the Inde is currently running low water because of the acute drought.
When the vehicle was already in the river bed, the man tried to maneuver the car out. But the attempt failed - the engine ran full of water. The man was still in his car when police arrived. Firefighters freed him.
During the conversation, officers noticed the smell of alcohol. A breath alcohol test was positive and blood was drawn from him at the police station. The man's driver's license was secured. The car was recovered with a special vehicle by the towing service.
