Cologne (dpa/lnw) - Supporting Ukraine with weapons against the Russian war of aggression remains correct, according to the Evangelical Council Chairmen. The commandment "Thou shalt not kill" also means that one must not watch innocent and defenseless people being killed in the middle of Europe, said the chairwoman of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), Annette Kurschus, on Saturday in the "Morgenecho" on WDR 5. Germany must therefore also help Ukraine to protect itself with weapons in the "inhuman war" against its own country.
At the same time, however, it is also certain: "No weapon will create peace." Conversation channels should not be filled up. There are discussions on several levels, also among "people with church connections". The Christmas message of peace has rarely been as necessary as it was at the end of this year. Kurschus warned that in the midst of war and "confusion" one should "not come to terms with the realities" and must strive to "contribute to peace". And not a single desperate, sick or refugee person should be indifferent to this society.
