North Rhine-Westphalia: Enough staff at the airport security check

In summer and autumn, many travelers at NRW airports started their vacation flight with frustration: the waiting times at the security check were often very long. It should get better now that the Christmas holidays are over.

Düsseldorf/Cologne (dpa/lnw) - The federal police responsible for security checks at the airports are confident that there will not be excessively long queues in NRW again during the Christmas holidays. "The service providers have given us a firm promise that the staff who have to be available based on the traveler forecasts will also be available," said a spokesman for the federal police. Nevertheless, there could be longer waiting times at the security checks on the main travel days. The airport operators are expecting the biggest rush during the Christmas holidays this Friday - but significantly fewer travelers are expected than in the summer or autumn holidays.

During the summer and autumn holidays in Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn, there were sometimes queues several hundred meters long in front of the security checkpoints. The Verdi union criticizes that far too few security personnel are available. The federal police are responsible for the security checks, which use private service providers for this purpose.

"We insist that the companies comply with their contractual obligations," emphasized the spokesman for the federal police. Nevertheless, he advised passengers to be at the security check two hours before departure, especially on the main travel days. Hand luggage should be as small as possible. "Only take what is absolutely necessary on board during the flight," he appealed. Liquids should not be in hand luggage, jacket pockets should be emptied before the security check. "These are all small things, but in total they can make the checks shorter or longer."
