North Rhine-Westphalia: Fake police officers stole a large amount of money from the elderly

Essen (dpa / lnw) - A 76-year-old fell victim to fake police officers in Essen. The woman received a so-called "shock call" on Friday, telling her that a family member had run over two people, police said on Sunday. The family member could only avoid imprisonment for a high bail, the fraudsters told the woman on the phone. The elderly woman immediately set out and initially withdrew a sum of money from a bank.

According to police, she had one of the scammers on the phone the entire time. According to the information, he then ordered a taxi to the bank, with which she then drove off several other bank institutes and withdrew money. Finally, she handed the now large amount of money out of the taxi at an agreed location on Zweigertstrasse in Essen-Rüttenscheid to an unknown person who had pretended to be a notary. The stranger, who was wearing an FFP2 mask, then disappeared into a driveway.
