North Rhine-Westphalia: Feller against poaching competition of the countries for teachers

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalia's school minister Dorothee Feller (CDU) does not believe in the Bavarian offensive to poach teachers from other federal states. "Years ago, the Conference of Ministers of Education decided that the states would not poach teachers from each other," said the CDU politician on Wednesday at the request of the German Press Agency in Düsseldorf. "North Rhine-Westphalia will stick to it and expects the same from Bavaria - in great agreement with the other states."

The head of the Bavarian State Chancellery, Florian Herrmann (CSU), announced on Tuesday that the Free State wanted to pay a flat rate for relocation costs for trained teachers from other federal states who decide to work in Bavaria. In addition, the teacher shortage in less attractive regions of the Free State should be countered with an allowance. A one-off regional premium of 3,000 euros will be paid if teachers decide to work in such areas.

In NRW there has been the possibility since 2020 of paying teachers special supplements and allowances in order to counteract local school type or subject-related difficulties in filling vacancies, according to the Düsseldorf Ministry of Education. Such financial incentives can be granted for 30 months in the amount of 350 euros per month.

In December 2022, Feller presented a comprehensive action plan to improve the provision of lessons. A decree of February 2 cleared the way for the first implementation: Among other things, secondments of teachers to particularly stressed schools are to be used more intensively. In the case of part-time applications that are not related to family reasons, a specific check should be carried out to determine whether the shortage of teachers as an official reason precludes approval - at least to the extent applied for.
