Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) - Last year fewer marriages were concluded in North Rhine-Westphalia than in 2020. As the State Statistical Office announced on Tuesday, a total of 76,771 couples said yes in 2021. That was 3.2 percent less than the year before (77,067 marriages). According to the information, 74,774 marriages between men and women and 1,997 marriages between same-sex partners (of which 1,113 female and 884 male couples) were concluded. In addition, 206 transformations of registered civil partnerships are included in the statistics.

In mixed-sex first marriages, men (average age 33.7 years) were a good two years older than women (31.4). Almost a fifth had previously been divorced or had their civil partnership dissolved at least once.
