North Rhine-Westphalia: Fire in an apartment building: Ten injured and high damage

Gevelsberg (dpa / lnw) - Ten people suffered smoke poisoning in a fire in an apartment building in Gevelsberg (Ennepe-Ruhr district). Residents were taken to hospital on Saturday morning with minor injuries, police said on Sunday. Property damage of around 200,000 euros was caused to the house. The building is not currently habitable.

According to the fire department on Saturday, the stairwell was on fire when the emergency services arrived. Several people would have stood at smoky windows. The residents were brought to safety using turntable ladders and portable ladders. The fire was extinguished promptly, the fire department said.

According to the police, the fire broke out in one of the apartments, the cause of which is still unclear. A resident noticed the smoke and called the fire department.
