North Rhine-Westphalia: fire on the World Heritage site: one injured

Essen (dpa / lnw) - A food truck on the premises of the Zeche Zollverein in Essen caught fire on Saturday afternoon. The truck's owner was seriously injured fighting the fire with a fire extinguisher. This was announced by the Essen fire brigade on Saturday. He was taken to hospital with burns and suspected smoke inhalation. The UNESCO World Heritage site on the site was not damaged in the fire, said a fire department spokesman.

When the fire brigade arrived, the safety valves on several gas cylinders lying on the bus had come loose, so that burning gas was escaping. The flames had already spread to another bus and a car. Firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading further. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage were still unclear, according to the fire brigade on Sunday.

The Extraschicht cultural festival taking place on the site was able to start as planned on Saturday afternoon - the extinguishing work was completed shortly before the start.
