North Rhine-Westphalia: Fruit thieves cause problems for farmers

Bonn/Dortmund (dpa/lnw) - Fruit and vegetable thieves worry many farmers. Sometimes the perpetrators came to the field at night with trailers or vans and packed them up, says Peter Muß from the Provincial Association of Rheinischer Obst- und Gemüsebauern in Bonn. The association does not have any figures on the total damage. In order to protect themselves from theft, many farmers fence their fields in, and video surveillance is occasionally used.

The phenomenon is not new. Obstklau comes up again and again and in all regions, says Muß. So far this year there has been no nationwide increase - despite the general increase in the cost of living. The State Association of Obstbau Westfalen-Lippe has also not observed any increase so far.
