North Rhine-Westphalia: Full closure of the A59 near Leverkusen on the first weekend in August

Leverkusen (dpa / lnw) - For the construction of the new Rhine bridge near Cologne and Leverkusen, the A59 will be completely closed on the first weekend in August between Kreuz Leverkusen-West and Leverkusen Zentrum. Autobahn GmbH Rheinland is lifting concrete parts on the A59 these days, as the state-owned company announced on Tuesday. The full closure is expected to last from 10 p.m. on Friday evening (5 August) to 5 a.m. on Monday morning (8 August). The A59 was then blocked in both directions between the Leverkusen-West motorway junction and the Leverkusen-Wiesdorf junction.

A diversion signposted with a red dot leads from the Leverkusen-West motorway junction via the A1 to the Leverkusen motorway junction and via the A3 to the Leverkusen-Zentrum junction. The Rhine bridge near Leverkusen, which was once designed for 40,000 vehicles a day, is no longer able to cope with the ever-increasing volume of traffic. The dilapidated Rhine bridge is part of the Cologne ring road, which is prone to congestion. The completion of the first of two new bridges over the Rhine is scheduled for the end of 2023. The second bridge is scheduled to be completed in 2027.
