North Rhine-Westphalia: grass burns: children are said to have ignited

Velbert (dpa / lnw) - Two girls are said to have set fire to a former football stadium in Velbert and thus set fire to the grass on the former stadium. Almost the entire grass area was destroyed, as the police announced on Tuesday.

A witness noticed the fire on Monday evening. He also found the two girls aged 12 and 13 at the scene of the fire. They initially said that several young people had caused the fire. The investigation confirmed the suspicion that the two had caused the fire themselves, as the police said. Charred objects were found in a shopping cart parked at the entrance to the stadium.

According to the police, the fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire quickly, but could no longer prevent almost the entire area from being damaged. The property damage was initially unclear. The police initiated criminal proceedings. The "Zur Sonnenblume" stadium was the home of today's Oberliga club SSVg Velbert until 2020.
