North Rhine-Westphalia: Great interest in 9-euro tickets for the Rhine and Ruhr

Gelsenkirchen (dpa/lnw) - The 9-euro tickets met with great interest at the start of sales on Monday in the Rhein-Ruhr transport association (VRR). The situation at the points of sale cannot be assessed right away, but the load on the servers of the VRR app for online sales has increased noticeably, a spokesman said on Monday afternoon. In Wuppertal, customers who wanted to purchase the ticket on paper even queued up on Monday morning, as the "Westdeutsche Zeitung" reported. In the city there had been a technical glitch during printing in the morning.

According to a survey, the VRR expects that every second adult in the VRR area who does not yet have a subscription will want to use the 9-euro ticket. For the network area, this means between 2.5 million and 3 million possible 9-euro ticket customers. The VRR expects significantly more passengers, especially at tourist destinations. "The authorities are currently examining the use of additional vehicles where they are needed," said the VRR.

The Wuppertal Stadtwerke had already started selling the 9-euro tickets online via their app on Wednesday last week. Since then, more than 7,000 have been sold in this way, the municipal utility said on Monday.
