North Rhine-Westphalia: Green Minister Neubaur insists on nuclear phase-out in April

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - In the debate about a further delay in phasing out nuclear power, North Rhine-Westphalia's Economics and Energy Minister Mona Neubaur (Greens) is insisting on the agreed date in mid-April. "Chancellor Olaf Scholz has confirmed and thus determined that the operating times for the remaining nuclear power plants in the Federal Republic will end on April 15, 2023," said the deputy Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia to the German Press Agency. She would like "that everyone with full determination demand the measures that are urgently needed for the development of a sustainable energy supply," added the Green politician.

"The answers from the past do not help for the solutions of the future," said Neubaur, referring to Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP). This had questioned the planned nuclear phase-out in Germany in mid-April. He had told the "Bild" newspaper that for a successful ramp-up of electromobility it was crucial that electricity prices did not get out of hand. If a lifetime extension could make a contribution to this, it should not be rejected too hastily, if only for reasons of climate protection.

After a word of power from Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), the federal government decided that the three remaining nuclear power plants should continue to run until April 15th. After that, the use of nuclear power should be over.
