North Rhine-Westphalia: Hacker attack on the University of Duisburg-Essen: IT paralyzed

Duisburg/Essen (dpa/lnw) - The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has fallen victim to a cyber attack. As the university announced on Monday, all digital services of the university have not been available since Sunday afternoon. "The entire IT infrastructure then had to be shut down and disconnected from the network. Central services such as PC applications, e-mail and landline telephony are not available," the university said.

The university's IT specialists worked flat out to repair the damage and restore the systems. How long this will take is unclear.

The attack on the IT infrastructure happened over the weekend. After the hackers penetrated the internal systems, they encrypted large parts and also demanded a ransom, it was said. The university management informed the responsible security authorities and filed a complaint. In addition, external specialists would be called in to quantify the damage and, if possible, to repair it.
