North Rhine-Westphalia: high-altitude rescuers abseil in Düsseldorf from 180 meters

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Rescuers from the fire brigade have roped down from around 180 meters from the Düsseldorf television tower. A total of six height rescuers from Düsseldorf, Cologne and Hamburg were involved in the exercise on Friday, as reported by the local fire brigade.

The rescue of people from a platform of the Düsseldorf landmark was practiced. The fire brigades of Düsseldorf, Cologne and Hamburg were all founded in 1872 and are celebrating their 150th anniversary this year. "When it comes to rescue from heights, your life depends on every knot and if you have to think three times about how to make the knot, then that's a problem," said a firefighter at the base of the tower.

The exercise took place in the run-up to the German Height Rescue Championships, which will be held this Saturday (October 1) in Düsseldorf. For the 18th time, high-altitude rescuers from Cologne, Hanover, Erfurt, Magdeburg, Essen, Braunschweig, Leipzig, Chemnitz, Frankfurt, Oldenburg, Hamburg and Stuttgart will compete with the hosts from Düsseldorf and the reigning German champions from Munich. The Düsseldorf high-altitude rescuers have already won the title seven times. The approximately 200 participants have to master five different tasks per team.
