North Rhine-Westphalia: Initially no traffic chaos at the end of the holiday in NRW

Despite the return traffic, the number of traffic jams in North Rhine-Westphalia was limited until Sunday afternoon. And at the airports it wasn't as bad as on some other days.

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - On the last holiday weekend in North Rhine-Westphalia, the traffic jams in the most populous federal state were initially limited, despite the return traffic. "There is more traffic than on a normal Sunday, but we are still miles away from a traffic jam in North Rhine-Westphalia at the moment," said Thomas Müther from ADAC NRW on Sunday afternoon.

According to him, there were traffic jams with a total length of around 80 kilometers in NRW in the early afternoon. "That's still acceptable for a return trip on a Sunday afternoon," said Müther. There were particularly many traffic jams on the A1 and A3 motorways around Cologne and on the A61. According to the ADAC, the traffic jams in NRW were also limited on Saturday.

There was also a lot going on at the Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn airports on the last holiday weekend in North Rhine-Westphalia. At Düsseldorf Airport, there were longer queues at security checks and baggage handling until the afternoon on Saturday. This in turn led to delays in departures, as a spokesman for the airport said. The main reason for this is the lack of staff.

There was also some rush on Sunday morning. But there were no long waiting times, it said. According to the airport spokesman, around 62,000 passengers were traveling at the airport on Saturday. As many as 67,000 passengers were expected for Sunday. Another 65,000 passengers were expected for Monday.

According to an airport spokesman, "completely normal flight operations" prevailed at Cologne/Bonn Airport throughout the weekend. Only on Saturday morning were there longer waiting times in front of the security checkpoints. Cologne/Bonn Airport is expecting around 120,000 passengers for the entire weekend from Friday to Sunday inclusive.
