North Rhine-Westphalia: irritation from an unknown substance: large-scale use at a high school

Datteln (dpa / lnw) - Eye and respiratory irritation in many students have led to a large-scale deployment of rescue workers at a high school in Datteln near Recklinghausen. The fire brigade was alerted on Thursday morning because of the escape of an unknown substance at the municipal Comenius Gymnasium, said a spokesman for the fire brigade. Emergency doctors looked at 70 students on site and classified 40 of them as worthy of treatment. As a result, six children were taken to hospitals, according to the fire department.

All other children were picked up by their parents at school during the course of the mission. Before that, the emergency doctors had talked about the process in the event of any health problems. According to the fire brigade, school operations ended on Thursday. No information could be given about the cause of the irritation. The gauges didn't show anything. The police are investigating. The large-scale operation involved 20 rescue service workers with seven ambulances, two emergency doctors and ten firefighters.
