Gütersloh (dpa / lnw) - Francesca Pia Vitale from Italy and the Spaniard Carles Pachon have won the Bertelsmann Stiftung's international singing competition New Voices 2022. According to the announcement, the two prevailed in the final with soprano and tenor voices and received prize money of 15,000 euros each.

In the final on Thursday evening there were seven singers and four male singers. A jury evaluated the quality of the singing, charisma and stage presence. The finalists were accompanied in the Stadthalle Gütersloh by the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra. For women, Eugénie Joneau from France (mezzo-soprano) and South Korean Yewon Han (soprano) took second and third place. Sakhiwe Mkosana from South Africa (baritone) and Dumitru Mitu from Moldova (tenor) took the places for men.

The competition, founded in 1987, is considered to be one of the most important exchanges for young opera talents. It is held every two years. 1,400 singers from 67 countries applied. 33 talents from 21 countries made it to the finals.
