Plettenberg (dpa / lnw) - An athlete got lost while running in a forest near Plettenberg (Märkischer Kreis) and triggered a large police operation with his disappearance. The 28-year-old man started his usual run around 9 p.m. on Thursday, the police said on Friday. At around 2:45 a.m. on Friday morning, his partner called the police and asked for help because her boyfriend had not returned. The 28-year-old is training for a competition, his run usually lasts about two hours, it said.
The officials telephoned hospitals, checked addresses and at the same time started a search operation. At dawn, from around 5 a.m., a police helicopter circled over Plettenberg in western Sauerland to take part in the search for the missing jogger. A person search dog had also been ordered. But then the missing person returned home safely at around 6:20 a.m. According to the information, the man had gotten so lost in the dark that he could not find his way back and spent the night in the forest. At sunrise he trotted home.
