North Rhine-Westphalia: jumping from the bridge into the Rhine: 35-year-old dead recovered

Duisburg/Rheinberg (dpa/lnw) - A man from Duisburg who has been missing since Sunday was rescued dead from the Rhine on Tuesday morning. According to the investigation, the 35-year-old jumped from a railway bridge in Duisburg-Hochfeld into the Rhine on Sunday afternoon, the police said on Tuesday. The man was wearing shorts and sneakers, said a police spokesman when asked. There is no evidence of suicide or third-party negligence, so the police assume it was an accident. Alcohol also played a role, it said.

Intensive search measures had already taken place on Sunday afternoon. Hundreds of police and rescue helicopters, sniffer dogs and drones, as well as numerous other fire brigade and water police forces, had searched in vain for the missing person for several hours.

On Tuesday morning, the fire brigade and police went out again after witnesses saw a person floating in the water near Rheinberg on the Lower Rhine (Wesel district). A few kilometers downstream, the emergency services then discovered the body of the 35-year-old.
