North Rhine-Westphalia: knife attack at Hamm University: perpetrator must be in psychiatry

A mentally ill man stabs a lecturer at the Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences. Three students are injured, some seriously. Now he has been convicted.

Dortmund (dpa / lnw) - Almost seven months after a fatal knife attack at the Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences, the perpetrator was admitted to the closed psychiatric ward on Friday for an indefinite period. The man suffering from delusions stabbed a guest lecturer on June 10, 2022 and injured three students, some of them life-threateningly. The act was triggered by delusions. According to the verdict of the Dortmund jury, the 34-year-old German was convinced that everyone at the university belonged to a clan that wanted to kill him. He wanted revenge for that.

The guest lecturer was sitting in a lecture hall when the perpetrator suddenly stormed in. With the words "Now it's over! Now it's your turn!" he immediately thrust a knife into the utterly surprised woman's chest. The pulmonary artery was hit. The 30-year-old died in hospital the next day.

During the process, the 34-year-old explained that all of the people involved were accidental victims. It was also completely irrelevant to him whether they died or not. He didn't even see the blood.

The judges assessed the acts as manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm. However, imprisonment was out of the question because of the attested paranoid schizophrenia. The 34-year-old was considered guilty. The judgment is not final.
