Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) - In 2020, the people in North Rhine-Westphalia had a slightly increased per capita income of 23,201 euros per year - albeit with significant differences between wealthy and poorer municipalities. This is the result of an overview of the 396 NRW cities and municipalities published on Tuesday by the State Statistical Office IT.NRW.

Accordingly, the disposable income in Schalksmühle in the Sauerland (34,687 euros) and in Meerbusch near Düsseldorf (34,210 euros) was almost twice as high as in Gelsenkirchen (17,635 euros) at the bottom. Kranenburg in the district of Kleve near the Dutch border also recorded comparatively low incomes (17,800 euros).

Statisticians understand disposable income as income from salaries, self-employment or assets minus taxes and social security contributions and plus social benefits received. It is considered an indicator of the financial circumstances of the population in the community and enables statements to be made about local purchasing power, whereby regional price developments are not taken into account.
