North Rhine-Westphalia: Last day of the 9-euro ticket: NRW offers an incentive for subscriptions

Essen (dpa/lnw) - For the last time, the citizens of North Rhine-Westphalia can use local public transport throughout Germany this Wednesday for the price of nine euros. The 9-euro ticket, which is valid nationwide, expires after three months on August 31st. There is currently a heated debate going on everywhere about a possible successor to the popular and very heavily used offer. However, it may take some time before a solution is found.

In order to alleviate the pain of saying goodbye to the 9-euro ticket and possibly win new subscribers, the local transport associations in NRW will offer their customers who have a subscription ticket (at the normal prices) an additional service over the next two months or incentive to buy. On the weekends in September and October, subscription holders can travel nationwide on buses, trains and local trains at no additional cost. The transport associations Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and Rhein-Sieg (VRS), the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) and the Westfalen-Tarif had announced this a few days ago.

According to the information, the offer relates to all weekends in the campaign period September and October, to the Day of German Unity on October 3rd and to all days of the NRW autumn holidays (October 4th to 14th).

During the promotion periods, the rules for taking people with you are also changed: two more people and up to three children (up to and including 14 years of age) or two people and up to two bicycles can travel with you per ticket. Time restrictions, such as 9 a.m. subscriptions, will be lifted during promotional periods.
