North Rhine-Westphalia: man entrenched himself with knives in the hallway: Taser use

Essen (dpa / lnw) - in Essen, police officers stopped a man with tasers who approached them with knives in his pockets. The 37-year-old was disarmed and taken to a psychiatric facility, police said on Wednesday. Everyone involved was unharmed. Tasers are long-range stun guns. This allows two electrodes on wires to be shot at attackers who are incapacitated by current pulses.

Residents of an apartment building in Essen had dialed the emergency number on Wednesday night because an unknown man was walking through the hallway armed with several knives. When the police arrived, the 37-year-old was holding a knife in each hand. He hid in a basement exit and did not put the knives away when asked. Finally he put the knives in his trouser pockets and approached the officers. They grabbed the taser and overpowered him.
