North Rhine-Westphalia: man falls on a cliff: difficult rescue

Porta Westfalica (dpa / lnw) - A man fell about 20 meters down a cliff in the Wiehengebirge and was rescued with serious injuries. The accident site happened near the Kaiser Wilhelm monument late Thursday afternoon, reported the Porta Westfalica volunteer fire brigade. The rescue operation was carried out under the most difficult conditions and with the help of the Espelkamp high-altitude rescue group. Several media had reported on the accident on the cliff near the border with Lower Saxony.

The victim's smartwatch registered the crash and sent an emergency call to a home emergency call center. This informed the district control center, which alerted the rescue services. The man who died was reportedly unresponsive. It was not possible to transport him on foot by stretcher, and due to the location in the forest, no helicopter could be used. A high-altitude rescuer roped down to the crash site with a basket stretcher, the injured person was then pulled up in the stretcher and taken to a clinic in the evening.
