North Rhine-Westphalia: Man threatens with a knife and is injured by police shots

Geseke (dpa / lnw) - A police officer in Geseke (Soest district) shot four times at a 30-year-old who was to be taken to a psychiatric ward and is said to have threatened officers with a knife. Two of the four pistol shots hit and injured his upper arm and buttocks, according to the Paderborn public prosecutor and the Dortmund police on Friday. There was never any danger to life.

During the operation on Thursday, the police officers would have provided administrative assistance. They had assisted in enforcing a court order that the man should be placed in a psychiatric hospital.

According to the announcement, a preliminary investigation into dangerous bodily harm was initiated in the office against the shooter. It will be checked whether it was self-defense or emergency aid. The operation was filmed by the body cam of one of the other officers.

The police officer who fired the pistol shots works for the Soest district police authority. For reasons of neutrality, officials in Dortmund are taking over the police investigation. The investigations are being conducted by the public prosecutor's office in Paderborn.
