North Rhine-Westphalia: Minute of silence for victims of the explosion in the chemical park

Leverkusen (dpa / lnw) - With a minute's silence, the seven fatalities of the explosion a year ago in a Leverkusen hazardous waste facility were commemorated on Wednesday. Exactly at 9:37 a.m., employees at the three locations of the operator Currenta in Leverkusen, Krefeld and Dormagen stopped, as a company spokesman said. At this time on July 27, 2021, a storage tank exploded in the chemical park facility, after which a devastating fire spread and other tanks were destroyed. Seven men died and 31 people were injured, some seriously.

The company spokesman said that some people from the group of those affected and the surviving dependents of the deceased employees came to the company headquarters to commemorate there quietly. There they met representatives of the management of the company that is planning two memorials. One should be built close to the scene of the disaster. The Cologne public prosecutor's office is investigating four Currenta employees for negligent homicide, among other things.
