North Rhine-Westphalia: mother died after a house fire: murder charges against the son

Detmold (dpa / lnw) - The Detmold public prosecutor's office has brought charges against a 56-year-old who is said to have set a fire in a house in Detmold and killed his mother. The 77-year-old suffered severe burn injuries in the fire on November 25 and died a day later in a clinic.

As spokesman for the regional court and the Detmold public prosecutor's office announced on Friday on request, the accused remains silent on the allegations. There is still no reliable evidence of a motive. The indictment before the Detmold district court is murder in combination with particularly serious arson resulting in death.

The police had pricked up their ears after the son, who was found in front of the house with only a slight burn injury, had denied the question of whether anyone was still in the house despite repeated inquiries - while the mother was surrounded by flames on the upper floor. He later told the police that he tried to save his mother, but there was too much smoke, the district court spokesman said.

The autopsy of the corpse revealed that the mother died of severe burn injuries. But there were also indications of blunt force such as hematomas. The prosecution assumes that the 77-year-old, who is said to have consumed a lot of alcohol, was definitely exposed to violence before her death. Whether the accused had anything to do with it is an open question.
