North Rhine-Westphalia: Negotiation: dispute over police photo of fans on Twitter

The relationship between football fans and the police is not always easy. In a 3rd division game between Duisburg and Magdeburg in 2017 there was a dispute over a photo. Now the top NRW administrative judges are deciding.

Münster (dpa / lnw) - The North Rhine-Westphalian Higher Administrative Court in Münster dealt with a photo published by the police on Twitter on Monday (1 p.m.). In a 3rd division football match in 2017, MSV Duisburg and 1. FC Magdeburg faced each other. Before the game, there was a traffic jam at the security check at the guest entrance because around 100 fans from Magdeburg had put on white rain capes.

The police commander suspected that the capes were intended to be used as a hiding place for prohibited pyrotechnics in dry weather. In addition, the porters could not be identified using video technology in such a veiled manner. When the fans coming up caused pressure, the police also warned via Twitter with a photo of the scene. A woman from Brandenburg felt that her basic rights had been violated because, in her opinion, she was recognizable in the picture. In the first instance before the administrative court in Düsseldorf, the lawsuit was unsuccessful in 2019.

The top administrative judges in North Rhine-Westphalia have ordered the plaintiff to appear in Münster and are expected to announce a verdict on Thursday following the oral appeal hearing.
