North Rhine-Westphalia: "NRW-Pressefoto 2022" documents the climate crisis in the state

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Three photographers won the award ceremony of the "NRW-Pressefoto" competition with contemporary testimonies to the climate crisis. From a total of five excellent pictures on Tuesday in the Düsseldorf state parliament, the works by photographers Barbara Schnell, Ralf Rottmann and Benjamin Westhoff show different sides of climate change and climate policy in the state.

The jury awarded first place to the picture "Unbeirrbar" by the photographer Schnell from Krefeld. The picture from March 9 of this year shows an activist in Lützerath sitting in front of a huge lignite excavator. In doing so, the jury judged in a previously distributed report that "the arguments about energy policy were summarized in an impressive way". According to the information, the jury had to choose from more than 220 pictures by 66 photographers.

Second and third place in the competition document the consequences of drought and dryness in the country. Photographer Rottmann shows the destroyed forest areas near Lüdenscheid Oedenthal in his second-placed photograph "After the fire. A forester tells his story". The focus of the picture is the head of the local forestry office, who looks out over the barren landscape. Westhoff took third place with his picture "No shipping, no shopping - low water in the Rhine".

The winning pictures can be seen in an exhibition in Parliament and on the website until January 19th.
