North Rhine-Westphalia: NRW wants to extend the deportation stop to Iran

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalia wants to extend the deportation stop to Iran beyond January 7th. More than three months after the start of the protests in Iran, the regime is continuing to act "with extreme severity" against the demonstrators, said the State Minister for Flight and Integration, Josefine Paul (Greens) on Wednesday. The executions of two demonstrators in December showed that the regime in Tehran will stop at nothing to intimidate the people. "In the current situation, it would therefore continue to be irresponsible to return people to Iran."

"In accordance with the decisions of the conference of interior ministers, we will therefore ensure that the deportation stop is extended beyond January 7th." NRW continues to advocate for a nationwide regulation.

Paul issued a decree at the beginning of November that deportations to Iran should be suspended "for international law and humanitarian reasons until January 7, 2023". The order does not apply to dangerous persons and offenders.

SPD parliamentary group leader Thomas Kutschaty had previously asked the state government to extend the deportation freeze to Iran. The situation in Iran came to a head towards the end of the year, he told the "Rheinische Post". The suspension of the deportations is a "commandment of humanity".
