North Rhine-Westphalia: Revocation of the naturalization of an IS supporter legal

Aachen (dpa/lnw) - The withdrawal of the naturalization of an IS supporter who was involved in combat operations in Syria is legal according to a judgment by the Aachen Administrative Court. The 31-year-old plaintiff, who was born in Germany, fraudulently deceived the authorities before he was naturalized in May 2012, the court said on Tuesday. According to the conviction of the 9th chamber, the plaintiff had already supported plans at that time that were directed against the free democratic basic order. The verdict is not yet legally binding. The plaintiff can apply for approval of the appeal at the Higher Administrative Court in Münster (file no.: 9 K 1741/17, judgment of May 16, 2022).

As a member of the Muslim group based in Euskirchen, the 31-year-old represented Salafist ideologies and attended lectures by radical Islamic speakers. According to the conviction of the court, the plaintiff was not able to credibly assure in the proceedings that he had broken away from this radical attitude.

He traveled to Syria in February 2013, joined several terrorist groups and took part in combat operations. The Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court sentenced him to 5 years and 3 months in prison. After his return in March 2017, the district of Euskirchen revoked his naturalization.
