North Rhine-Westphalia: series of fires in Dortmund: imprisonment and drug therapy

The public prosecutor's office indicts a suspected arsonist for 15 acts and even evaluates two cases as attempted murder. After 30 days of negotiations, everyone agrees: it wasn't quite like that.

Dortmund (dpa / lnw) - A 35-year-old man from Dortmund has been sentenced to four years and two weeks in prison by the Dortmund district court for aiding and abetting gang theft and arson. Originally, the public prosecutor had accused the man of 15 arson attacks and even classified two of them as attempted murders of numerous residents. "But the indictment has pretty much melted together," said presiding judge Thomas Kelm in the verdict on Monday.

The accused had stated in the trial that he had formed a gang with several accomplices in autumn 2019 in order to commit theft. While he was a lookout, his accomplices searched for e-bikes in the basements of apartment buildings. At some point they would have started setting fires after the crimes - probably to cover up tracks.

This information could not be refuted by the 35-year-old. He was therefore only sentenced for the acts in which his DNA had been secured at the crime scene. The Dortmunder did not reveal the names of his alleged accomplices in the process.

The accused is said to use part of the sentence for drug therapy. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
