North Rhine-Westphalia: shot at the fair: police with sniffer dogs on the go

Lüdenscheid (dpa / lnw) - After the fatal shot at a fair in Lüdenscheid, investigators used the help of sniffer dogs. So-called mantrailing dogs were used on Wednesday, the public prosecutor's office and the police announced on Thursday. The animals are considered to be super noses and are trained to perceive and track smells - for example from individual people.

In the case of Lüdenscheid, this meant that parts of the A45 and A46 motorways had to be closed off for the search measures because of "traces of smell picked up," the investigators said. The exact background and possible successes of the action initially remained unclear. The investigations of the homicide commission continued, it was said.

At a fair in Lüdenscheid in the northwest of the Sauerland, a 40-year-old was shot dead at the exit of the festival area about two weeks ago. Previously, there had been an argument between a 16-year-old and a group on the premises. The 40-year-old apparently died as a bystander.

A 16-year-old is in custody on suspicion of manslaughter. However, investigators had also received information about other suspected participants.
