North Rhine-Westphalia: shots after tank fraud: man caught after two weeks

Marienheide/Hagen (dpa/lnw) - After two weeks of searching, the police caught the man who fled in Hagen after a gas tank fraud and was shot at by an officer. The 28-year-old was arrested on Friday morning in Marienheide (Oberbergischer Kreis), police and prosecutors said. An arrest warrant was issued against him.

According to investigators, he simply drove away after filling up at the end of October without paying. When a police officer spotted him, he accelerated. The officers tried to stop him with a patrol car that was parked sideways. The suspect is said to have specifically driven towards a police officer who shot twice. The man escaped.

Whether the shots hit him or the vehicle was not clear from the investigators' statement on Friday. A few days after the crime, the getaway car was discovered in Hagen, it said. The 28-year-old from Gummersbach was then identified through an extensive trace analysis. An arrest warrant had been issued for resisting law enforcement officials, dangerous intervention in road traffic and fraud. Because of the driving towards the policewoman, an investigation is also being carried out into the allegation of attempted homicide.
