Lünen (dpa / lnw) - Five young people were seriously injured in a car accident in Lünen (Unna district). The drunk 18-year-old driver escaped with minor injuries, police said on Monday. The driver had lost control of his vehicle, which was occupied by six people but only registered for five, early on Sunday morning.

The car went off the road, hit a lamppost and rolled over. The five passengers, aged 15, 17 and 18, were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver was found to have a blood alcohol level of over 1. According to the police, some of the occupants were not wearing their seat belts when the accident happened. "Drivers are responsible for securing their passengers," it said.

The 18-year-old is now facing criminal proceedings for endangering road traffic.
