North Rhine-Westphalia: Ski areas in the Sauerland are expecting a small rush of visitors

The presents are unwrapped, the Christmas roast was delicious - but on Christmas Day many people have had enough of family celebrations. In the winter sports areas in the Sauerland, it is then traditionally full. If only it wasn't so mild this year.

Winterberg (dpa / lnw) - The ski and toboggan lifts in the Sauerland are expecting a small rush of visitors on Christmas Day. December 26 is traditionally one of the busiest days of the winter season, said a spokeswoman. After the family celebrations, many winter sports enthusiasts are drawn to the slopes. However, this year it will probably not be as crowded as usual because of the mild weather. The conditions are good: the snow cannons produced enough snow at the beginning of December so that around 50 lifts are open - including in the Winterberg ski lift carousel, in the ski area Willingen or in Neuastenberg.

The Sauerland winter sports arena includes 34 ski areas with 126 lifts. The largest contiguous ski area is the Skiliftkarussell in Winterberg, where there are 34 snow-covered runs with a length of 27.5 kilometers. Those responsible for tourism hope that many people who cannot afford an expensive holiday in the Alps this year will come to the Sauerland for a short trip.
