North Rhine-Westphalia: Small flood wave floods the banks of the Rhine

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - The small flood wave that flooded parts of the Rhine promenade in Cologne should reach its highest level on Tuesday. The water levels remain far below the values at which there would be a danger for inhabited areas or restrictions for shipping. Early on Tuesday morning, the waterways and shipping administration for Cologne reported a water level of 5.30 meters - that's almost a meter below the high water mark I, where the first restrictions on shipping apply.

In the course of the afternoon, the water level in Cologne and Düsseldorf is expected to drop again. On the Lower Rhine near Emmerich, the experts expected falling values again on Wednesday.

Heavy rainfall had caused the water level in the rivers to rise in the past few days. But it was nowhere dangerous. In August there was still a historic low water level in the Rhine due to the persistent drought.
